Robert Klippel was one of Australia’s pre-eminent sculptors, recognised for his abstract assemblages fashioned from scrap metal. No. 247 Metal construction creates an interplay between the ungainliness of discarded machine parts and the elegant (and almost organic) sculptural form they become. Klippel’s meticulous exploration and repurposing of the machine forms creates a new relationship to the assembled objects which, sitting atop a table, suggest the final sculpture might be momentarily poised in stillness and could skuttle from its perch.
