Kapa haka is the Māori term for traditional performing expressed in dance and song. This figure, ‘Whero’ (red in Māori), was one of 15 security guards modelled on the artist’s own brother, with each carrying their own swipe card labelled with the name of a colour in Māori. The figures subvert the stereotype – particularly in Australia and New Zealand – of the unyielding Polynesian security guard, looking beyond clichéd, one-dimensional representations of Māori culture and identity, while at the same time acknowledging realities facing Māori communities. As a series, ‘Kapa Haka’ also reminds us of the impressive authority exhibited by Māori warriors in dance.
