Pala Pothupitiye has been dedicated to manipulating and re-appropriating historical maps made during Sri Lanka’s Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial periods. He sees such historical documents as tangible objects of colonial power, drawing a direct correlation between the colonial experience with the ethnic division that fuelled the subsequent Sri Lankan Civil War (1983–2009). Pothupitiye adds a number of recurring motifs, embellishing the muted colours and cartographic lines with colourful illustrations to retake ownership of this history. This particular piece is based on Kalutara Fort, which was first built by the Portuguese, later captured by the Dutch and eventually surrendered to the British.
