Lê Thuý’s Echo originated with the recovery of nine doors from a dismantled house in the historic town of Hội An. The artist has transformed these architectural remnants with red lacquer and gold leaf, embedding references to history, memento mori and pan-Asian religious iconography. At the centre stands a shadowy, multi-armed figure with her hands forming the symbolic gestures known as mudras. In this figure, the artist intentionally evokes a fusion of Guanyin – the Buddhist goddess of mercy – and the mother goddess Đạo Mẫu, a Vietnamese spiritual tradition. Surrounding plants and animals are chosen for their symbolic resonance, from medicinal and poisonous species to emblems of prosperity (peony) and moral virtue (bamboo).
