Mabel Juli’s distinctive artwork uses minimalist forms that sit in large fields of seductive colour. These beautiful surfaces are achieved through the application of up to six layers of naturally derived ochre pigment. In its abstracted imagery, Marranyji and Dinal depicts the events of a simple narrative: an old woman is searching for her dog, which was chasing a kangaroo into a water-filled cave. Juli uses black charcoal to represents the woman’s efforts to find the dog by burning the surrounding grass. This work focuses on a moment of spontaneity between human, animal and the land, shown here in bold planes of colour.
