Basket 2008

In the Torres Strait Islands, natural-fibre baskets and mats are usually made for immediate use because, due to the tropical conditions, they can deteriorate quickly. Charlotte, Jenny and Jennifer Jr Mye are three experienced artists from Erub (Darnley Island), who work with both natural fibres and with brightly coloured strapping tape: fusing old and new, the industrial materials are check-woven using a traditional technique. Generous in form and incredibly strong, their baskets are an outstanding example of contemporary innovation.

Woven into the sides of these baskets are images of the distinctive dhoeri headdress, drums and Torres Strait Islander, Australian and Aboriginal flags. This basket illustrates the artist’s technique and ingenuity; similar baskets are often used in social settings and are very popular as tote bags.
