This is one of just three prints that Jacoulet created without a human subject. He made hundreds of sketches and watercolours of flowers, birds, insects and butterflies, but preferred to use them as the background landscapes for his portraits. Jacoulet began collecting butterflies during his first visit to the Pacific in 1929, amassing an extraordinary collection of almost 30 000, now partly housed in the Osaka Museum of Natural History.
