Daphne Mayo designed this medal for the former British Medical Association, Queensland. It honours the distinguished medical scientist Dr Joseph Bancroft (1836–94), whose portrait appears on the obverse and his microscope on the reverse. The medal is awarded on the occasion of the biennial Bancroft Oration, inaugurated in 1926 and continued by the AMA Queensland Branch.
