Henry Rielly established his reputation in Victoria where he was a founding member of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1870. He came to Queensland about 1885 and settled at Stanthorpe - both his sisters married men connected with the tin mining industry. He exhibited Ghost Gully evening at the Queensland Art Society, Brisbane the year it was executed. The title 'Ghost Gully' suggests a melancholy event, which is reinforced by the dead trees behind the camp site and the twilight setting. Ghost Gully was a small watercourse adjoining Whiskey Gully (so named because it was the site of an old hotel) about three and a half kilometres south of Stanthorpe.
