Gift of Mrs Selina Rivers 1929

Richard Godfrey Rivers (1859–1925) was art master at Brisbane’s Central Technical College from 1891 to 1915, and Daphne Mayo was one of his students. He was also a founder in 1895 of the Queensland National Art Gallery (now Queensland Art Gallery), becoming its first honorary curator. The portrait was commissioned posthumously by Rivers’s widow and Mayo struggled to achieve a good likeness.
