From an early age, Robert S Rayment showed a talent for painting, but, in deference to his parents’ wishes, he studied law. He was once a pupil of influential English art critic and watercolourist John Ruskin, but little is known of his artistic career before he migrated to Australia in 1887. As Rayment’s active career in Queensland lasted just six years, paintings such as this impressive landscape are extremely rare.
