Will Smith’s watercolours are fine examples of the new and dynamic approach to composition, which emerged with the rise of Modernism. The stark, geometric planes of sombre colour and the simplistic rendering of the tree lend Beach houses a sense of foreboding referencing the war and belying the innocence of its subject, which is the Brisbane bayside suburb of Nudgee Beach.
