William Bustard was an important figure in the development of art in Queensland from the 1920s to the 1960s. His major focus on landscape is epitomised inthis delightful painting, (Brisbane River, Indooroopilly). The principal interest is in Bustard's treatment of reflected light sparkling on the broad Brisbane River, the waves spreading out in the wake of the passing boat which is just visible under the tree branch to the left of the composition. The work is painted in definite, impasted brush strokes which is a noticeable departure from the broad, flat areas of pale colours he uses in a significant oil painting, Summer haze 1937. This painting and (Brisbane River, view to Graceville church) were acquired by the former owner directly from the artist prior to 1947, when he worked alongside Bustard in the Army camouflage unit at Townsville during World War Two.
