APT8 Cinema
Presented as part of APT8, 'Filipino Indie' is a survey of independent and experimental digital filmmaking from the Philippines. The program highlights an artistic turn towards experimenting with documentary realism and the creation of hybrid forms of non-fiction and drama. The term documentary is treated as an expansive field; a wide assortment of material is included in the program — activist video and social media uploads are presented alongside more conventional feature films, documentaries and artist videos.
Co-curated with leading Filipino artist Yason Banal, the project comprises a screening program and a new video work by Banal titled AN UNTITLED EPISODE_ 2015. A visual essay drawing together a wide range of visual material, Banal's video screens in the cinema foyer throughout APT8 exhibition. For Banal, the work functions as 'an experimental curatorial essay for the screen, combining Super-8 film, chroma effect, still images, text, graphics, sound, a superstar actor and fragments of Philippine cinema, reality TV and art industry. Exploring document and abstraction, memory and movies, essay and performance — a discursive low-fi fantasy made realness.'
