Lives and works in Singapore
Genevieve Chua approaches abstraction as a mode of data visualisation, drawing on such disciplines as natural history and linguistics. Major sources for her work have included Singapore’s status as a ‘garden city’, its persistent ‘haze’ and the rhythms of Singaporean English. The resultant paintings combine a number of techniques, including printmaking, and often take on sculptural forms, placing themselves within an area of ‘two and a half dimensions’.
Artificially Intelligent stems from Chua’s interest in computer algorithms. These graphic works resemble non-linguistic concrete poems and are constructed from computer keyboard characters such as stops, slashes and brackets. Their tactility is emphasised through lightly printed embossing, inspired by braille. The prints are accompanied by sculptures of etched acrylic sheets, resembling the cooling systems of central processing units. For all their reference to automation and machine learning, Chua’s works focus on a particularly human response, expressed through the poetic devices of compositional and material problem-solving.
