Abstract painting has become a signature part of Syagini Ratna Wulan’s practice since 2016, alongside installations, participatory projects and representational works. With an interest in the corporeal reception of and interactive possibilities in abstraction, Ratna Wulan is fascinated by the unique way we perceive colour and the individual sensibilities colour can evoke in us. Natural phenomena, such as rainbows and spectral colours, the physics of light emission and mathematical theory, as well as the consumption of images through digital technologies, inform these ruminations.

Ratna Wulan also experiments with the limits of painterly abstraction as her works become sculptural, manifesting in multiple geometries, materials and modular forms. Titled Halo, the artist’s most recent series emerged through an exploration of geometries and how artificial colour can emulate the physical and mathematical phenomena that produce light and colour in nature.
