Water peanuts 2001 depicts a seasonal food source (Eleocharis dulcis) that grows in fresh water sites in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. It is prized as a tasty and nutritious dietary addition. Small creeks and billabongs are places of refreshment and renewal to Kunwinjku people who live amongst the rocks and caves of the Arnhem Land plateau. Fresh water sources in this region are also associated with Yawkyawk, a mermaid-like spirit with hair of green algae, often depicted by the Kunwinjku in paintings and sculptures.
