KONISHI, Junji; Liqueur cups
Junji Konishi has said: 'I am interested in considering sculptural expressions in reference to my work. This approach is very important, as I endeavour to understand the purity of form and explore the overlap of this in sculpture and silversmithing. Simple forms truly capture intrinsic beauty and convey harmony and balance. My work is a transmission of the most profound energy and emotions that evolved from my spirit and heritage thus, the work is an expression of my deepest self.
'My technical knowledge and skills were learnt from engineering metalsmithing, Japanese traditional metal craft and Western silversmithing. While continuing to learn silversmithing in Australia, my technical development proceeded from my investigations of the Japanese metalsmithing heritage.
'The inherent qualities of my chosen materials are significant, and understanding these qualities are important as the majority of my works are functional. Process is important in my work. I use silver often to express my ideas, not because it is a precious metal but for its innate qualities, which appeal to my sensibilities.'(1)
