Grounded in the democratising aspects of technology, Tim Johnson’s super-8 film Sports Carnival 1972–74 expresses equality and play as part of the art–life continuum. Operating on the premise that art can be found in any setting, Johnson ‘created’ this film while he was working as a high school teacher. Johnson abdicated the artist’s traditional role by handing control of the camera to his students, who facilitate their own expressions as they perform, direct and record their own ideas and experiences.
