Jenner’s artistic legacy to Brisbane was numerous vignettes of the Brisbane River, offering unique insights into the city’s waterway at the end of the nineteenth century. Looking downstream to Petrie Bight, where the Story Bridge now spans the river, Jenner has positioned himself to the right of Botanical Gardens, composing the river scene to include a delightful selection of vessels that once sailed along it.
His service in the British Navy gave Jenner a deft eye for the intricacies of sailing vessels: here, he depicts steam, sail and smaller rowboats, with his expertise demonstrated in the delicate rigging of sailing ships. Composed in a romantic style, the large white building in the middle distance is the then newly completed All Hallows main building, standing out on the skyline of the young emerging city.
