EXPANDED LABEL: 2018.218 LANDGRAF
Embedded in the layers of Lele Wale (to leap for no reason) 2018 is the story of the land of Kakaʻako, once home to an abundance of fishponds, saltpans and wetland taro that prospered among a number of sacred burial grounds. The offshore area of Kewalo was dredged in the 1920s to create Honolulu harbour and the material was used to fill in the land of Kakaʻako. Almost 50 years later, this concealed spiritual hinterland was designated as Hawaiʻi’s first development district — the breeding ground for ‘ultra-luxury’, high-rise condominiums intended for sale at exorbitant prices to foreign investors.
