In the late nineteenth century, CGS Hirst produced a series of charming, naive renderings of houses and public buildings in Brisbane, Ipswich and Toowoomba, of which this work is a fine example. This painting records the achievements of one of the smaller landholders of the colony of Queensland in the 1870s, and shows an abundant and cultivated landscape with individuals pursuing work and leisure activities. The top of the painting is demarcated by a fence line, which separates the wild, untamed bush from the farm’s ordered prosperity.
