The early twentieth century saw the rise of new styles of photography worldwide, including in Queensland. Encouraged by advances in film development and camera production, enthusiastic hobbyists and amatuer camera clubs flourished alongside professional practice. Rose Simmonds was active in Queensland photography circles from around 1925 to 1941; during this period, she was the only female member of the Queensland Camera Club. Simmonds explored the new soft-focus pictorialist style in her work, taking her lead from the atmospheric landscapes of painters such as JJ Hilder and Sydney Long. She also explored more urban themes, including Brisbane’s Grey Street Bridge, seen here.
