The work of the late Queensland watercolourist Joy Roggenkamp first came to prominence in the 1960s and 70s. Roggenkamp's artworks expressed her engagement with the natural world, and her oeuvre largely comprised landscapes of Brisbane and its surrounds, being instinctive responses to the rhythms and shapes of nature.
This painting shows the artist’s skill in using the fluidity of the watercolour medium to contrast diffused blocks of colour with calligraphic line. Roggenkamp sets these against atmospheric washes to create a powerful and evocative image of this iconic area of south-east Queensland. In 1981, the Roggenkamp moved to Maleny, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and the area — distinguished by the adjacent Glasshouse Mountains — became a constant source of inspiration.
