Gabriella Mangano and Silvana Mangano often use improvised choreography to emphasise gesture, process and sculptural forms in their video works. There is no there 2015 was inspired by the Blue Blouse movement, a Soviet Union theatre collective (1924–32) that developed a type of performance called ‘Living Newspapers’, which brought the news of the day to the Soviet people. Drawing on this legacy, the performers enact simple, choreographed gestures and movements that the artists have gathered from news articles and images, and from observations of the broader social and political climate. With this work, the artists propose ‘the body as protest or the body as witness’.
