In this intaglio print, artist Pedro Wonaeamirri represents Tiwi ceremonial regalia and a large Tiwi spear. Tiwi spears are artefacts unique to the Tiwi Islands, produced only on Melville and Bathurst islands.
The spear that Wonaeamirri has represented is the Arawinikirri, which has long barbs down both edges of the spearhead; unlike the Tunkalinta/Tunkaringa spear, which has barbs down only one side. The Arawinikirri spear represents the tail of the apical crocodile ancestor, Jerekepai, who was the first to make the spear. Like all Tiwi ceremonial or traditional objects, these spears are applied with bold geometric Tiwi designs.
