Composition 1922 is a drawing of simple shapes, carefully assembled and indicative of a violin. The shapes have been stacked on top of one another, with varying shades of grey pencil. The neat, linear pencil markings are made visible to the viewer and compliment the purposeful forms carefully arranged on the paper.
Albert Gleizes’s drawing is reflective of the artist’s interest in the flat image, which placed emphasis on structure. By the 1920s, Gleizes had developed a style of art-making that featured intersecting vertical, diagonal, horizontal and circular movements. These characteristics are suggestive of his commitment to early modernism. The artist sought to challenge the rules of traditional picture painting and experimented with the picture plane, proportions and movement.
