Mitchell - artist statement
Artist statement
In this work, I wanted to allow the audience to see the world through someone else’s eyes. Mitchell Wilkes is a Year 9 student at my school and has deteriorating eyesight. This film offers a glimpse through his lens for a few minutes. What you see is drawn from interviews with Mitchell where he described his sight. I chose to put a large focus on the way Mitchell sees nature and people's faces, and the way he uses his drone as another set of eyes. Mitchell approved all the visuals, ensuring the film is an accurate depiction of his distinctive eyesight.
Process
Along with studying other films, the visuals of the artwork are based on extensive interviews with Mitchell, in which he provided detailed insights into various aspects of his impaired vision. Snippets of these interviews served as the inspiration behind the visuals of the film. My goal was to create images that serve as portals into Mitchell’s vision, contrasting them with clear cinematography to create an effect. To do this, I utilised visual techniques such as juxtaposition, montage, and jump cuts to show the audience the differences between our personal perceptions of the world around us.
About the artist
My ultimate goal in life is to write and direct feature films. These are exciting times for filmmakers, thanks to technological advancements that have made it possible for anyone to create a film. My inspirations come from the power of movies and the way in which they can portray characters, places, and periods better then any other art form.
