This artwork depicts the occasion of ‘Na cere’, which is when a visiting tribe is presented with gifts as a welcome to the village. In some villages, the exchange takes the form of a game: a race held between women from both parties. In this instance, one women carries the most valuable gift, known as the tabua. She runs ahead while all others must chase her. The side that catches the leading woman will get to keep all the gifts that have been brought to this occasion.
