WILLIAMS 2023.048a-k
Justene Williams imagines new lives for objects beyond their original intended uses, following in the avant-garde tradition of the readymade. She has used mannequins in her practice to examine contemporary fashion and wellness industries rooted in conformity and consumerism. Distorting their body parts and combining mismatched limbs and torsos, Williams draws attention to the absurdity of current beauty standards: 'I started to create them with different bodies, because it used to really annoy me how they were all the same.'
The title Hepworth's Hole, and the punctured torso of the mannekin, reference the work of avant-garde artist Barbara Hepworth (1903–75) – a leading figure in British modernism, known for the characteristic holes through her abstract sculptures.
