Mingimarny Creek runs through the Macqueen family property at Mount Emlyn, near Millmerran on the Darling Downs. The creek’s name may be derived from an Indigenous Australian language originating on the Downs, but there has been little linguistic study of the area. According to a centenary history of the Millmerran Shire published in 1981, the word ‘Mingimarny’ dates to the early years of pastoral settlement: Marny, a shepherd from nearby Yandilla Station, camped on a reserve on the banks of this creek and was known locally as a mean (or mingy) man.
