Satyanarayan Suthar is a Kaavad artist from Bassi village in Rajasthan, where the distinctive art form has been passed down from father to son for generations. Kaavads are portable, painted wooden shrines composed of multiple hinged panels, intended to resemble the opening thresholds of a Hindu temple. The doors are slowly unfolded and are traditionally accompanied by a storytelling performance, focusing on epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with genealogies and tales of local deities, heroes and patrons. In recent decades, artists have begun to incorporate new motifs drawn from everyday life, such as cars, planes and computers.
