When affordable Hi8 camera recorders became widely available in the early 1990s, Brisbane-based artist Lyndall Milani turned her attention to video. During a 1992 residency in Besozzo, Italy, she used her camera to record a ‘visual diary’ as she explored the town and travelled across Europe. The everyday scenes Milani captured formed her ‘found life’ series, stating: ‘I would begin filming and would just stay with the moment until, almost without fail, some small moment or vignette would unfold in front of the camera’. In The Spiral 1992, Milani films a staircase inside the Ottoneum Museum of Natural History in Kassel, Germany.
