John Vickery is known for his work in Op art – the use of geometric forms and abstraction to create optical effects. (Untitled) is from a group of paintings of white shapes set against matte-black backgrounds. To heighten the visual impact, Vickery traced lines of fluorescent colour along the milky white shapes, making the forms appear to glow against their dark surroundings. Vickery painted his lines freehand without using tape, creating smooth and seamless surfaces that are a testament to his skill and precision. He refined his technical proficiency through the experience he gained in his day jobs as a commercial illustrator for advertising agencies in Melbourne, London and New York.
