Ambika, a powerful form of Parvati, is one of the principal goddesses in Hindu tradition, worshipped alongside Saraswati and Lakshmi. Also known as Devi or Amba, she is associated with autumn and the harvest and is often depicted with four or eight arms. In this oleograph, Ravi Varma presents Ambika seated on a green throne beneath a royal parasol, signifying her divine sovereignty. The scene is adorned with moti work, a type of beaded embellishment that differs from zardozi, which uses metallic threads. The fine beading adds texture and ornamentation to Ambika’s garments and jewellery. In the background, court attendants look on while, in the foreground, two women play a sitar and drum.
