Based on a painting by CG Ramanujam, an artist closely associated with the Ravi Varma Press, this oleograph depicts Krishna alongside Radha and Rukmini – his earthly and spiritual consorts, both linked to aspects of the goddess Lakshmi. Krishna is identifiable by his distinctive peacock-feather crown. The figures have been later embellished with fabric and zardozi embroidery, adding a devotional richness to their garments and ornaments. The ornate gold arch that frames the scene, along with the figures’ slightly larger-than-life presence, reflects the influence of Tanjore painting – a distinct style of South Indian art originating from the city of Thanjavur (formerly Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu. This composition merges Ramanujam’s interpretation with stylistic elements drawn from regional traditions, an aesthetic deployed by the Ravi Varma Press and its affiliated artists.
