In this photograph, Simryn Gill documents the effects of mining industries on the Australian landscape. She took the images in her ‘Eyes and storms’ series while flying in a light aircraft over remote mining territories in Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia. From her aerial vantage point, Gill captures the intermingling of nature and industry, obscuring the boundaries between them. Her photographs depict open-cut mines, dams and roadways which, from above, resemble orifices in the earth and atmospheric patterns, as reflected in the series title. Capturing the sun’s reflection, Gill shows the beauty of the natural world enduring despite such disturbances.
