Artist statement
2020. A year that brought the world to a standstill, leaving an indelible mark on society. Amidst the profound impact of the pandemic, it is essential to recognise the unique struggles faced by the younger generation. In my artwork, I delve into the psychological consequences of the pandemic on young people. It shows a teenager desperately chasing a departing train, his anxiety intensifying as he finds himself hindered by a younger child struggling to keep pace. The artwork explores the conflict the young protagonist faces — trapped between the expectations and pressures to mature during the latter teen years, and the absence of social development opportunities caused by the pandemic. The struggle of the teenager is palpable, as he races to catch up and embrace the opportunities that come with early adulthood, while still clinging to the remnants of his broken childhood.
Process
I had many conflicts regarding the direction of my artwork; beginning with various sketches and ink drawings inspired by the comic artists whose graphic novels I have grown up with. My work then developed into a digital-style piece, as I felt I could better express myself through a medium that allowed me to utilise colour and texture to further convey meaning.
About the artist
As an artist, my creative journey is an ever-evolving narrative shaped by the profound influences of my surroundings and personal experiences. Living through the era of the Covid-19 pandemic and witnessing the rapid surge of technological advancements has profoundly impacted the essence of my artistic expression as I aim to capture the unique experiences and struggles of being a teenager in a rapidly evolving world. I don't see my selection in the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art as an accolade; but as an opportunity to share my narrative with audiences. An opportunity for viewers to delve into my world, resonate with my perspective, and perhaps find elements of their own journey mirrored in my work.
