Artist statement
In the realm of the audible, we discover and experience not only melodies and rhythms, but also an intimate sensation transformed by our own emotions and memories. This artwork is an exploration of this intricate bond between self and sound. It is not simply a portrayal of individuals donning headphones; rather, it delves into the notion of music becoming an inseparable part of our being. Headphones, often seen as mere tools, are depicted here as an extension of the body, suggesting that we are, by nature, wired for sound, yearning to connect with the harmonies that resonate with each of us.
Process
The concept for this body of work was developed in class at school. Using classmates and family members, reference photos were taken with selected poses, composition, and lighting to achieve the desired effect and mood and further emphasise the intended meaning. A wash was created on the canvas upon which rough sketches and guidelines were painted, which were then developed and refined to produce the final product.
About the artist
My name is Ciaran Glasheen, I am a Year 11 student at the Cathedral School of St Anne and St James and I take a Visual Arts class as part of my studies. From unintelligible scribbles in kindergarten to daily crayon renditions of the Eiffel Towel in my early primary years and more recent portraits, art has accompanied me through almost all stages of my life. What I like most about art is the range of creative channels through which I am able to express myself, my emotions and my interests without fear of judgement and how I am able to interpret others’ work in a similar sense. I wish to pursue art further and ideally incorporate this interest in my future.
