Artist statement

Society (in concrete) was formed in response to rapid, widespread societal progression and is composed of cast concrete forms. Concrete was chosen as it replicates the stylistically understated, grey compositions of cities. A society of human figures formed in concrete fill the frame, interlinking within each other like jigsaw puzzle pieces. Some cast figures fit seamlessly into the spaces, while others find themselves on the outside; compressed, filling in the cracks. Created, destroyed, rebuilt. The urban environment remains a reflection of society as it was, is, and will be.

Process

My art process was heavily research driven with inspiration from artist Gaëtan de Séguin and urban landscapes. Gaëtan de Séguin uses colour and composition to portray human concepts, an effect I attempted to continue in Society (in concrete). Concrete is the predominant material of choice for commercial, industrial, and residential urban designs, thus I felt it best represented urban landscapes. The assemblage is composed of individual concrete forms which interlink. These forms were cast in a flat box mould and shaped minimally after setting. This was an intentional choice to preserve the clarity of the meaning behind choosing concrete.

About the artist

To me, art is a vital component of societal expression, it has been present since time immemorial and will continue for posterity. Art enables us to learn about the thoughts and experiences of different members of our society throughout time.
After school, I’m hoping to study medicine, as I’m interested in people and physical health. I would like to continue making art and further develop my knowledge of new mediums.
I feel extremely grateful to be the recipient of this Award. Having the chance to exhibit in my regional and state gallery, through this program, is an incredible opportunity.
