Artist statement
Loss can have a profound effect on one's emotional wellbeing, inciting a cascade of changes to one's life trajectory that can be felt in a multitude of ways. While loss is a part of the human experience, the loss that refugees face goes beyond the realm of personal grief, with the loss of life, freedom, innocence and home being a harsh reality many refugees must endure. I aim to highlight the profound impact of loss and create a space for empathy and understanding towards the struggles of refugees. The life jacket is filled with rocks, covered in sand, sea water and sea salt, and holds stories of survival, loss, hope and tragedy. I encourage viewers to reflect on their own privilege and consider what they can do to support those who are less fortunate.
Process
Through investigating the artwork of Ai Weiwei and Shaun Tan, I wanted to highlight the profound impact of loss and create a space for empathy and understanding towards the struggles of refugees. The life jacket is filled with rocks, covered in sand, sea water and sea salt, bearing stories of survival, loss, hope, and tragedy. Sea water and sand was collected from beaches, establishing a direct, real connection to the journey endured.
About the artist
I have been a student at Pittsworth State High School from 2018 to 2023. I love all types of art, especially artworks that provoke change. I enjoy making artworks that aim to raise awareness on contemporary issues and believe that art is one of the most important things ever to exist. When not partaking in art you will find me listening to my vinyl records, especially from artists Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Fleetwood Mac and Blondie.
