Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri was born at the isolated Aboriginal community of Kiwirrkura in Western Australia. His early childhood was that of the semi- traditional hunter-gatherer and he is one of the few surviving desert artists who grew up in an entirely tribal and migratory society. He commenced painting for Papunya-Tula in 1986. His paintings strongly reflect his Pintupi background, with a strict adherence to the classic Tingari cycle iconography of concentric circles and straight lines. (The Tingari are a group of ancestral beings who brought law and culture to the peoples of the western desert.) This painting depicts designs associated with a large group of women who were camped at the site of Marapinti to the west of Kiwirrkura community for the purpose of performing ceremonies; they all wore the Marapinti (nose-bone) through their noses. The meticulous geometric refinement and rigour of this painting are the hallmark of Pintupi painters. In this work the artist's particularly subtle understanding of colour relationships enhances the hypnotic quality of the concentric circles.
