During the eighteenth century, the factory established by Dr Wall in Worcester became famous for the quality of its fine porcelain service wares. According with the taste of the day — and following the precedent established by the Chelsea factory in London — these wares were richly decorated. Decorations of groups of animals, largely inspired by the fables of Aesop or Lan Fontaine, appeared first at Chelsea and subsequently at Worcester. The fable relating to this pair of wolves, however, is not identified. Such groups at the latter factory are generally attributed to the hand of the Irish miniaturist Jeffereys Hamett O’Neale.
