Eugene Carchesio’s art is enigmatic and mysterious. His objects delight audiences with their simple, jewel-like appearance and thoughtful balance of the intellectual with the aesthetic. In this work, portrait with inner self 2017, Carchesio plays with the notion of an intersecting physical world and a phantom world of ideas.

Here the ‘portrait’ remains somewhat elusive, although it might reside in the memory of the Encyclopaedia Britannica covers used as painting supports. Equally, the simple abstract symbolism based on rectangle and diamond shapes might give form to both a physical likeness and an internal state of mind.
