Born 1980, Quezon City, The Philippines
Lives and works in Antipolo, The Philippines
Across her versatile practice, Lee Paje has created paintings, installations and sculptures in materials such as wood, copper, resin, paper and video. Whatever her chosen medium, her works reveal a meticulous attention to detail and refinement of technique. The Stories that weren’t told 2019 and Someday, somewhere, when we are the sea — a new commission for APT10 — are paintings on copper panels that combine elements and tropes from Filipino creation story and Judeo-Christian origin myth into a hybrid creation story that envisages a new form of paradise.
These large-scale works are Paje’s most recent and ambitious, reflecting her perspective on gender and the diverse cultural and historical influences that have shaped the Philippines as a nation. They continue her interest in disrupting the narratives and metaphors that perpetuate inequality and gender specificity. In retelling normative stories she creates avenues, paths and alternatives in which marginalised people can identify themselves and re-envisage their past, present and future.
