Lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Thasnai Sethaseree is interested in how power and seduction fold into state and commercial imagery — particularly in his home country. Sethaseree’s large-scale collages are distinguished by their iconography and by the layering of cut and shredded coloured paper, based on traditional Thai paper-cutting techniques. Through their vibrancy and colour, the works also link to Northern Thai Lanna weaving, used for ritual and celebration.
The epically scaled triptych It's unclearly clear, as yet incomplete involved over a year of research and has taken almost three years to create. Comprising 30 to 40 layers of paper and including stretched Buddhist monks’ robes, newspapers clippings and urethane, the triptych employs specific papers associated with structural problems in modern and contemporary Thailand and beyond. Sethaseree uses scale and spectacle to mimic the use of aesthetics to ulterior, manipulative ends, distracting citizens from their displeasure or discord at the state of national affairs.
