In addition to his philanthropic support, James played a crucial role in steering the Gallery’s Foundation over many years, initially as a member of the Foundation Council and its Fund Investment Committee, and as a member of the QAGOMA Foundation Committee from 1999 to 2017.

In 2017, the Queensland Art Gallery Board of Trustees and Director awarded James the QAGOMA Medal, in recognition of his exceptional and inspiring contribution to the Gallery.
