WELCOME TO THE ASIA PACIFIC TRIENNIAL
Spanning both the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, ‘The 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ includes new and recent work by artists from Australia, Asia, the Pacific and their diasporas, and considers many forms of knowledge and approaches to art-making. This edition of the Asia Pacific Triennial series builds on more than three decades of close engagement with the region, reflecting its social and cultural diversity through the contributions of more than 200 artists and creators.
This Triennial offers a platform to explore diverse perspectives on urgent local and global themes, representing the complex interwoven cultural landscapes of Australia, Asia and the Pacific. In particular, the exhibition delves into how artists acknowledge vulnerabilities and create time and space for healing and care of culture, community, heritage, land and one another. These concerns are expressed through various gestures, from acts of empathy and mourning to revival, critique and social action, as artists continue to offer nuanced insights into our understanding of what it means to coexist. Their works address power dynamics, natural and urban environments, intergenerational experiences of migration and labour, and develop sophisticated approaches to storytelling, motifs, materials and techniques.
First Nations, minority and diaspora cultures play a crucial role in this Triennial, and the project is further enriched by the collective, performative and community-driven art-making that thrives in the region. Co-curated and co-developed projects focus on particular contexts, highlighting the diversity and innovation of these places in ways rarely seen internationally.
The Triennial also includes cinema programs, projects for children and families, community partner activities, publications and public discussions that consider shared ideas and concerns, cultivating understanding and fostering cultural connections. With grateful acknowledgment of the artists, collaborators and communities who have generously contributed to the development of the exhibition, we welcome you to the 11th Asia Pacific Triennial.
