EXPANDED LABEL: 1993.345 MILPURRURRU TREMBLAY
Born in 1934, George Milpurrurru is from the Ramingining area in Central Arnhem Land. A prolific artist, his many bark paintings illustrate a wide range of subjects which are made available to him through his extensive ceremonial knowledge. A theme which constantly re-emerges in his paintings is 'Gurrumba Gurrumba', which is also the name of his clan and translates as 'flock of wild geese'. Development of this theme has led to the use of pattern in his work, through the repetition of a single image. This characteristic feature of Milpurrurru's art is also evident in this lithograph, although it appears in a more pared down and graphic form, minus the heavily patterned backgrounds typical of his paintings.
