CULBERT, Bill; Jug, windowpane
Bill Culbert's series of jug and windowpane photographs from 1980 illustrate his versatility with both the sculptural and created components of his practice: 'a jug is also a table lamp pouring its spilt light, and jugs can form ubiquitous patterns of flight across the parlour wall'.(1) In the photograph Jug, windowpane, an overturned vessel and spilt liquid on a table surface are photographed from above. From this viewpoint the windowpane is branded across the scene, and the flatness of the glass is rejected by the rippled effect of the spilt liquid. Other jug and table scenes photographed by Culbert include the electric illumination of vessels from within, reflected onto table surfaces. He has also pursued a series of jug photographs with the inclusion of shaped pieces of glass to imitate the liquid spill.
